For the economic production of hand tools and hardware, an automated grinding process for pre- and finish machining of high-quality forging blanks is indispensable. The process-safe alignment and recognition of the workpieces is the basis for perfect functional surfaces in terms of shape, surface and symmetry. The combination of optical detection of the blank geometry with regard to tolerances and hardness distortion of each individual workpiece before grinding and a grinding process with target/actual value comparison ensures consistently high final quality despite varying incoming qualities. The rejection of faulty blanks (form error, undersize, distortion) is thus fully automatic.
