Term Main definition
3D printing

3D printing refers to manufacturing processes in which three-dimensional workpieces are produced by applying material in multiple layers. The process is based on a digital model. Unlike many conventional processes no parts of a raw material are removed to create the product. Instead numerous thin layers are applied on top of each other in the form of the desired workpiece.

Additive manufacturing

Additive manufacturing also known as 3D printing refers to manufacturing processes in which three-dimensional workpieces are produced by applying material in multiple layers. The process is based on a digital model that can be used and created by a 3D printer. Unlike many traditional processes this process does not remove any part of a raw material to create the product. Instead numerous thin layers are applied on top of each other to form the shape of the desired part.

Automation

The goal of technological automation is to carry out processes with minimal human assistance. This is achieved by using machines that follow programs to control processes and perform work.

Automation solution

Automation solutions are concepts for the automation of a plant. Automated machines can function mainly without the involvement of humans. The control of processes can also be transferred to the machine which for example uses sensors to check the stock of raw materials or to change the tools for different workpieces.

CBN

CBN is an abbreviation for 'Cubic Boron Nitride' which is one of the hardest materials. Due to its hardness and very low wear rate the material is suitable as a cutting material. This allows a high degree of shape accuracy and dimensional accuracy to be achieved even with hard materials.

Cemented carbide

Cemented carbide is a material consisting of fine carbide particles and a binder metal. The advantages of cemented carbide include its high hardness and low wear rate. Cemented carbides are often used as cutting tool material for example in indexable inserts. Since they are particularly temperature-resistant which allows for with higher cutting speeds.

Chassis & steering

The chassis comprises all the components of a vehicle that create a connection with the road surface. These include the wheels wheel carriers brakes suspension and steering. Steering refers to all vehicle equipment used to change the direction of movement. In conventional vehicles steering devices are often used for this purpose which transmit a movement from the steering wheel via the steering column to the chassis.

Compressor blade

The compressor is one of the main components in a gas turbine. The compressor blade is a rotating blade on the disc of a compressor. It adds energy to air by increasing its pressure and density as it moves in the engine. Compressor blades are made of special steel alloys or materials that do not deform even under high loads and at elevated temperatures.

Deburring

Deburring is necessary to remove edges fraying or splinters from workpieces. Burrs can occur during the manufacturing process of different workpieces and can impair the function of the end product.

Dial

The dial is attached to the front of a watch or other hand measuring device to display values noted on it. In conventional mechanical watches sections of the dial are labeled with the hours.
